This blog will serve as the 'home on the web' of the European Urban Field Class 2009 from the University of Sheffield. Second year students in Town and Regional Planning, and Geography, will participate in a field class in this northern French city from 1-5 April 2009.
So, why are we going to Lille? Well, from the perspective of
European spatial planning it is in a strategically important location - being located at the heart of the so-called 'blue banana' or
'banane bleue'. It is also a former industrial city that has since experienced significant reinvention and development - some of it due to
Eurostar. There are also important urban design elements here which merit a further look - for example, the way in which the old Lille has successfully been integrated with the new. Another element is
location - something Lille is famous for.
